Diamond cutting tools can be one of the most useful tools in a workman’s arsenal, offering a simple way to cut extremely tough materials such as concrete, stone and brick efficiently. They can, however, be one of the most dangerous tools too – if used incorrectly.
Safety should be paramount to anyone using a diamond cutting tool, as the consequences of improper use can be inconvenient at best and very grave at worst. If you’re a site operator, you will be responsible for the safety of any workers or contractors making use of diamond tools, so it’s important to make sure that your workers are properly educated.
In this post, we’re going to outline some basic safety procedures to take whenever you use a diamond cutting tool; be it the first time or the 500th time.
Before Using the Tool
Before you even pick up the tool you’ll be using, make sure that you are dressed appropriately for the job. This means observing basic safety protocols such as wearing well-fitted clothing, appropriate footwear and, in most cases, a hard hat. Safety goggles, gloves and a face mask should also be considered essential when using diamond saw blades.
It’s also imperative that you inspect your workspace before begin cutting; make sure that the area is free of any obstructions or potential tripping hazards, and ensure that any co-workers are stood well away from the area you are cutting in, lest they be caught by a hot spark.
Once you’ve properly suited up and cleared your workspace, it’s time to inspect the blade itself. A damaged blade will not only work ineffectively but can also represent a risk to your personal safety, so it’s vital that you diagnose any issues before you start working. Telltale signs of damage include cracks, dents or slight warping of the blade.
The guards and flanges of the tool you are using should be in place and undamaged. These components essentially act as your protection when using a diamond blade and their proper function should be considered of the utmost importance.
The diamond blade should be installed firmly and shouldn’t be able to wobble or move beyond its standard circular operation. If you find that your blade is moving, affix it properly before operation.
Different diamond blades are suitable for different purposes; some will be able to cut extremely tough materials with ease whereas others are used for high-precision cutting of softer materials. Usually the manufacturer will make it clear which materials are suitable for use with a particular tool, so check that you’re using the appropriate tool for the job.
You’ll also need to check whether your tool is a wet cut, dry cut or a hybrid tool. A wet cut tool uses water as a coolant, lowering the temperature of the blade and the material it is cutting during operation and preventing overheating. Dry cut tools use air as a coolant but are aware that they require some time between cuts to cool down sufficiently and shouldn’t be operated for long periods of time.
During Operation
Before cutting, turn the tool on and allow the blade to run for a few moments. Listen out for any odd sounds, such as vibrations caused by a loose blade and turn off the tool immediately if you hear anything out of the ordinary.
Maintaining a firm grip on the tool, stand to the side of the area you are cutting and apply a small amount of pressure to the material – you might think that concrete would require a lot of effort to cut but diamond tools are specifically designed to cut through with a minimal of effort. Applying too much pressure can lead to overheating and damage to the blade.
When cutting, always cut in a straight line; diamond tools are not designed to be able to cut in a circular or curved line and attempting to do so can cause the blade to deflect and cause serious injury to you or those around you.
If you are using a dry cut blade, allow for short breaks in between cuts so that the blade can cool down and continue to operate at its best.
